the wheels are going to look hot on the coupe... but ima have to go with everyone else wing... not my steelo... but its your car and if you like it then more power to you... have you timed your setup or dynoed... looks like it could do some damage...

s_18@CH
02-27-2006, 12:56 PM
Well, the wing is planned to go as soon as I can afford it...
It's about the only remaining thing from my ricer days.
Atleast it's not the worst one I could have (those nasty aluminum wings are far uglier in my opinion)
but it would with no doubt look much better without it.
Anyone of you guys may donate money to my paypal address :)
If I get enough, I'll take it off in a heartbeat.

I haven't dynoed it yet, that will hopefully happen within half a year or so.

Yeah, ditch the wing and get a carbon fiber trunk or flush mount wing to cover the holes.

And those amplifiers, they're huge.
Nice car and nice build pics. I love the engine block pic.

Just ordered a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires, dimension 215/40-16.
Can't wait to get them on my Grids, and putting them on the car.

Nippon Racing P29 pistons, std. bore. I think my list contains everything there is.

And thanks to all of you making comments. It's nice to get feedback, regarding both things you like and dislike.
Espesially hearing people appreciate and commend the work I have done (yes, I have put ALOT of hours, and not least money into it),
means a whole lot, so keep it coming!

s_18@CH
03-05-2006, 08:36 AM
Took a few more pics, with the center cap on and a rear hub held in place by the lug nuts.
I think the BuddyClub P1 lug nuts look perfect together with these wheels!

First picture is taken with flash, and the second without.
The first one seems to best reflect how the wheels really look in normal lighting.

Then I have replaced the trailing arm bushings and put in new LCAs. The swaybar isn't painted yet, so I'll put that on later.

Look how worn they have become:

Press out and press in:

Then... I have rotated the bushings a bit, to compensate for the lower point of gravety.

Old and new LCA. The new one has mounting holes for a swaybar ;)

Some moist pictures:

Thought I should show you guys how we placed the Trailing arm bushing to compensate for the car being lowered.
This is done to prevent the bushing to twist while the car is still on the ground, as it will if the car is lowered and otherwise stock..

This is in other words an effort to reduce wear on the bushings themselves.

Blue line: stock placement
Red line: how we adjusted them

Have done quite a few things today:
- Painted the rear arches (saw some signs of rust, so I decided to stop it before it spreads)
- Changed to a stock 56mm throttle body (to see if cold idle becomes better with FITV valve)
- Mounted oem style fog lights
- Mounted oem head lights with amber corners
- Painted the 15mm rear swaybar yellow
- Replaced front window moldings
- I also put in a new cd-player a few weeks ago (Rockford RFX-9420)

Have also done a minor tuck on the injector wires :)

My muffler has touched the ground... Probably last weekend when we where 3 persons in the car.
That's why I won't lower it any further... I'd rather be able to drive it, than to slam it, looking great but not being able to drive...

In lack of something new to show you, I might as well put in my drawn picture...

It's currently in a car repair shop, because it had some trouble I couldn't figure out.
Turns out the almost new distributor from D-king is broken.
They got a new one, but that one was broken too
So I'm still waiting for my car... When I get it back, I will give it a good cleaning,
and take off the wing by using some fiber tape to mask the holes.
Can't wait to start driving it again! Haven't driven it properly since November...

Car still doesn't work, after a month at the work shop. They couldn't find the error...
So I took it back. I don't get spark, and the fuel pump won't prime when I switch ignition to step 2.

I'm really lost... I just want to drive it!!!

Took some pictures to comfort myself... Wing still isn't gone, as I have other things to worry about.
Lip is also off for the time being (to be able to tow it).

have you checked all your grounds?.... also does your check engine light come on at all when you turn the key to "ON" position?.... and might want to check your fuses......... Hows the main relay?... is your timing belt broken... better yet... have you checked your cam?... believe it or not they do break...

s_18@CH
05-12-2006, 07:17 PM
I get a solid CEL, no spark and no fel pump prime... I have two relays, but I think I need to try them in a car I know work.
So I can rule them out (or in)...

Fuses checked, grounds seem ok, I'm sure the timing belt and cam is fine.

WOW I cant believe how I missed this build! This is one hell of a Coupe! Thanks for sharing with us. I dont think it looked that bad with the wing it gave it a style all its own but if you happier with it off then more power to you!

Have you figured out the problem yet? Let me know what is going on exactly maybe I can diag it for you from here.
No, unfortunatly not... I'm going to the local Honda dealer tomorrow, to ask them a few questions.
Maybe we'll take the car to them on a hanger...

The problems are:
- No fuel pump priming when turning the ignition to 2.
- No spark

I have suspected bad main relay or ecu... Trouble is, I bought a relay from a junkyard.
Still the same problem. I have measured them both as described in the Helms manual.
Seems to be working... Soldiered all contact points on one of them.
Still nothing. I'm still not certain that it works though...
To be that I would have to try it on another car...

I have used the old stock P06 ecu, to see if the problems went away when using it.
Still nothing... Same damn problem...

So, now I really don't know what it might be. The fuel pump works, the distributor should work (have a brand new one now, but I suspect the old one to be working aswell.

By now I just really want to drive my baby, so if taking it to the Honda workshop is what it takes, I'll do it.

s_18@CH
05-18-2006, 02:26 PM
Well, I just tried my P28 in a friends Civic... Fuel pump primed, and engine light went out after 2 seconds...
So the ECU should be working...

I've tested:
Main relay
ECU
Fuses
Fuel pump
Distributor
Ignition switch

I'm thinking it must be a broken wire somewhere, or something like that.
What sensors are critical for the ecu to send signal to give fuel and ignition?
Any way to narrow down the "search area"?

I will try and get them to trouble shoot according to chapter 11-30 and on tomorow,
which might show which wires are broken. Hope this problem i solved soon!

Well, still waiting to get my car back... I think it might be ready any day now.
Maybe even today, if I'm really lucky!

In the meanwhile, I have a small project in mind. Making the center console look a little bit nicer, without that hole...
Thinking of buying a block-off plate, and adding contacts for audio in (for connecting my laptop to the sound system),
and USB for datalogging and uploading new maps to the Ostrich.

The final thing on there is the LED and push button for calibrating the LC-1 wideband.

What do you guys (and girls for that matter) think?

Well the car works... But the reason it happened is just plain stupid...
When I exchanged throttle bodies, I had to extend the TPS wires...
The isolation tape I used must have really sucked, because it was a short between them.
That's simply why it wouldn't start...

Unfortunatly I soon got a new problem... The left front caliper is hanging very hard.
The caliper got very hot... Hope to fix it later tonight. Atleast the car is running now.

And here are some new parts for my next winter project. 3rd, 4th and 5th gear from a D16Z5 (DOHC ZC) tranny.
My D needs a close ratio tranny, so I'm hoping to obtain a 4.437 Final Drive aswell.

dont really know a whole lot when it comes to trannys....but u got the s20(d16z6) tranny on there now i am assuming. is the gear ratios in the zc better and shorter? cause from i have heard the s20 is one of the best u can get for a d series...but i could be wrong

s_18@CH
05-29-2006, 05:45 AM
Let me lay it out for you guys, the master plan :) I don't have much knowledge myself, so this won't get very technical...

The EX tranny has ok 1st and 2nd gear, but the rest of them are too long.
When taking it into 3rd, the rpm drop is a little too large, so accelleration suffers.
Also, the theoretical top speed of the EX tranny at 7800rpm is 285 km/h, which my engine will never do.

My plan is to shorten in the distance between the gears, and to add a better FD for accelleration.

The stock ESi (EDM EX) tranny has the following gear ratios according to my findings.

Stock ESi tranny (rev limit: 7800rpm)

1st:------------3.250---------0/7800----42%----62 km/t
2nd:------------1.900-----4560/7800----34%---105 km/t
3rd:------------1.250------5132/7800----27%---160 km/t
4th:------------0.909------5672/7800----15%---220 km/t
5th:------------0.771------6616/7800-----------285 km/t
Final Drive:-----4.25

Custom Close-ratio (rev limit: 7800rpm)

1st:------------3.250---------0/7800----42%----59 km/t
2nd:------------1.900-----4560/7800----29%---101 km/t
3rd:------------1.346------5526/7800----23%---142 km/t
4th:------------1.033------5986/7800----15%---186 km/t
5th:------------0.878------6630/7800-----------218 km/t
Final Drive:-----4.437

This should make the top speed a far more obtainable 218 km/h (136 mph).
I don't need at all to go faster than this anyway, seeing 80 km/h is the max speed limit around where I live.
Om a track this should also be adequate.

The silver lining is that I get better accelleration, what is really my goal here :)
Making this D16 fun to drive has been my goal the entire time, and I am starting to become happy with it now.

After tuning it on June 21st, I think the tranny build will complement it quite nicely.
Hope this explained a bit, allthough I really have little knowledge about trannys.

I've seen the 0.702 been posted as the US spec trannys, but this european spec sheet said 0.771...

hey could you look up the gear ratios on the LSi d15b7 for me?
or do you just have the ESi specs?

because this thing you're doing gave me an idea too.
i said before that i think i blew up my tranny, or at least the reverse-gear
so i'm thinking of opening them both up and mix 'em up a little.

reverse, 1st from d15b7 box,
and the rest from the z6 box. does that work?

sorry for the hijack

s_18@CH
05-31-2006, 10:15 AM
Well, I just looked at the spec sheet I have, and it seems the ESi 4th gear is different from the US EX tranny.
Not much of a difference though. I'll post the sheet I have as an attachment.
Don't really know if it's accurate.

Specs for the LSi tranny seems to be:
3.250/1.900/1.250/0.909/0.750 FD: 4.25

Specs for the ESi tranny seems to be:
3.250/1.900/1.250/0.937/0.771 FD: 4.25

I think 1st and reverse from the B7 tranny should work in the Z6 tranny, but don't take my word for it...
I'm a real tranny n00b

Yesterday, as I was driving home from a Japanese car meeting, my engine sound started ticking.
It happened while I was pushing it hard in 4th, at around 7k rpm (might have been up to 7600, as my limiter is set to 7650rpm).
No weird noices right then and there, but when slowing down I heard the engine ticking.

Could it be the valve lash suddently being wrong? I checked the nuts a few minutes ago, and they seemed tight.
All valve springs look allright, and as far as I could see the cam is fine (hard to see though).

I recorded a small video, from different angles, so you can hear for yourself.
Tried to see if it got louder when close to the head, but really hard to tell.

I hope it's not any bearings on the crank... Give me your opinion Honda experts.
And is it safe to drive while it's like this for about a week, or should I try and take care of it?

s_18@CH
06-11-2006, 06:17 PM
Well, now I and a friend has jacked up the car, and taken of the oil pan, girdle, etc.
Seems the rod and main bearings are just fine. No abnormal wear as far as we can tell.
Took some pictures of the main bearings, and the rod bearings where the same.
Anyone have a link on this subject? Pictures of bad bearings and such?

JdmRevelations
06-12-2006, 03:49 AM
damn i hope you find out what is wront with your motor...

s_18@CH
06-14-2006, 01:17 AM
Today we have carried out some tasks...

First we measured the rod bearing clearances:

Cylinder 1
Lower: ,038mm
Upper: ,030-,035mm

Cylinder 2
Lower: ,038mm
Upper: ,030-,035mm

Cylinder 3
Lower: ,038mm
Upper: ,030mm

Cylinder 4
Lower: ,038mm
Upper: ,038mm

I'm quite satisfied with the readings.

After mounting it back together, we took a compression test (on cold engine)... It showed 230, 195, 220, 160
So it turns out that the compression in cylinder 4 is low. We suspect something wrong with the valves.

Even after adjustment of the lash, it ticks just as bad.

So I will probably get a new set of valves (Omni or something), valve guides and a 3 angle job.

Of course the tuning session will be pushed back a bit, that's just how it is...
Here's a few pictures of the prosess.

JdmRevelations
06-14-2006, 01:27 AM
maybe a bent valve....

s_18@CH
06-16-2006, 10:01 AM

My car is standing in the garage of a friends uncle.
This uncle looked at my head today, and said he saw some ugly scratches on the cam at cylinder number 4 :(
So, it might be a rocker arm hanging or something :( Hope my cam isn't ruined.
If so, and I'll have to get a new one, I guess it's hello Crower 3...

s_18@CH
06-22-2006, 01:22 PM
Well, took a look at the head today, and it didn't look all too well...
The cam itself has quite a few scratches, and the bearing surfaces on the head has the same thing...
The funny thing is on one of the exhaust lobes on cylinder 3... Seems a piece has chipped off.
Not sure how come this is... But the scratches might be due to bad lubrication?
Kind of worried my oil pump is bad. I will replace it now I think, just to be certain.

Bearing surface - cam.

Bearing surfaces - head.

Rocker arm assembly - couldn't see anything wrong here, but I'm no expert.

Chip on ex.lobe. This isn't normal, for sure.

smo_ej2

bad lubrication or something for sure.

Today I have made a pre-payment for Endyn. They are going to get me my new head.

They will get a core, inspect it and all. Then Larry will give it a stage 2 port job, insert bronze valve guides and do a 3 angle valve job.
I have also ordered a set of valves and hardened split locks from him.

Yesterday I ordered a few items from Pegasus which will help me remove my power steering (breather tank etc).

I also have a plan of ordering various items from summitracing... ARP rod bolts, oil temp. and pressure gauges, B&M fuel pressure regulator and gauge, sandwich adapter and gauge pod.

In addition to this I am going to get various oem parts, to get my engine up and running, properly.
Oil pump, piston rings, various gaskets and stuff are on the list.

In the mean time, I hopefully will get to work on an engine a buddy of mine is hopefully getting.

Well, today Larry at Endyn has received my deposit, and they have gotten a head for me.
Head is cleaned and disassembled, and they are starting putting the bronze valve guides in on monday.
Porting will take place when he's done dynotuning a supercharged D-series engine, and a B-series.
Both will be in Honda Tuning Magazine. This info was given by himself in a mail today.

Nice to know that someone with real knowledgde prepares my head.
He decided to go with stock intake valve size, and 0.5mm oversize on the exhaust valves.
This was allowed by the ZC pistons valve reliefs, as he has tested on a set they had in-house.

I can't wait to see how this one turns out! :D

In lack of anything else new for the time being, I'll show you my new seat rails.
They are from an ordinary hatchback, and I'm hoping to lower my seats a little with these.
I have the EDM VTi (same as JDM Ferio?) front seats, which comes from a 4-door.
These sit noticeably higher than the stock DX seats.

I'm hoping that these rails should to the trick, allthough I'm not all sure how it works.

- Oil pressure, oil temperature and water temperature gauge from the Auto Meter Cobalt series.
- A-pillar pod to fit 3 gauges (Hopefully Shimmer gray is the right color for my interior. Atleast that's what the Honda dealer said)

- Rod and main bearings according to color code
- A set of Piston pins
- Oil pickup
- Oil pump
- 3 Toyo S2000 oil filters
- B16 throttle body gasket
- various stuff of little importance

s_18@CH

where did you get your tilton reservoir? and how much?
www.pegasusautoracing.com/ has the parts.

Part numbers are:
3564 Threaded Cap for Tilton Master Cylinder & Reservoir
3558-SMALL Tilton Reservoir Tank, Small
3557 Tilton Remote Reservoir Mounting Bracket
3563 Tilton Remote Inlet Fitting - on Master Cylinder
3577 Clamp for Tilton Inlet or Reservoir

Now, I'm a little uncertain what that remote inlet fitting would do.
I just took the part numbers from this guide on honda-tech, but I think that part is useless.
Have to look into it some more until I know for sure.
Ther whole thing costed me $38.10 shipped to Norway, so it's not bad at all.
If it works atleast. But you can save another $3.99 if that inlet fitting is useless.
Might do a write-up if I can just remember to take enough pictures :D

I can now confirm that there is a difference between the seat rails on hatchback/coupe and sedan.
Left: Sedan Right: Hatchback

This is how it looks when I fiddle around with the seats...

Where some rust on the rails (as usual), so I just had to use some paint on them.

This is how it looks with the power steering gone, and a minor tuck on the harness.

The Edelbrock will have to do... I think ITBs will be a little too much of a head ache right now.
I have too much to do allready, and I'm using off my school money (loan) to do this project. :)
I'm just too into the car to not do anything ;) But ITBs I will do without for now atleast.

Today I installed the Skunk2 shifter, Spoon knob and put in the seats with my new hatchback rails.
Turned out absolutely lovely in every way. Shifts feel really "crisp" :TU:.
And sitting lower than with the sedan rails also felt really great!

My package from Summit racing arrived today.
So far, I have fitted the B&M fuel pressure regulator and gauge. Looks beautiful if I must say so myself.
I aslo put the nipple for the regulator vacum hose to the back of the manifold.
I think that detail cleaned the whole thing up quite a bit.

I'm very happy with the Cobalt instruments. Not a bad choice in my opinion.

Comparison of the P28 and P29 pistons. No wonder the compression bump is so high. ;)

Modified the usb cables to fit in the panel I'm making:

The gauge pod looks great...

A lot of soldering is required to modify the car like this :)

Had to remove a few items to gain access.

Did some work today, as you would expect :TU:

Finished assembly of ground and power wires for the gauges

Testmounting the gauges in their pod

Took off the pillar garnish, and this is how it looked beneath it

Quite a chunk of wires to feed these gauges

And then to mate these two...

Hole for the wires. Had to build up some courage to do this!

"Glued" together with Sikaflex. Hope it holds up.

I have wired the gauges to come on when I flip the light switch.
Both the gauge light and sensor output (function of needles) is wired here.
Does this seem stupid to you guys? Should I wire the actual operation to IGN2 or something?

I myself think it'll be allright, as I allways have my lights on anyway (required by law).
But what do you guys think? Still possible to redo the wiring, but I don't think it's necessary.

Volume 8
07-19-2006, 09:48 PM
You should wire the signal output to the IGN and the Illumination to the light switch. that way the gauges will work without your lights being on and the lights will only come on with the parking/headlights.

Put in a bid on an oem dimmer switch on eBay today. Apparently, no one in Norway has these.
They didn't come in our EDM cars, which is really very strange.

The reason I need it, is because the gauges are too bright to drive with at night.

A new day has passed, and I have done a few more things. The engine is now completely ready to be hoisted out.

Everything in the way has been removed, oil is drained out, driveshafts are out, and basically all that's left is to take it out.

My dad has built a work bench today, and I have only halped him a little bit.

I have also vacumed the floor, and cleaned up a bit. Arranged all the tools, and parts.

Got the engine out today... But that's where it got worse.
Took out the pistons, and found two broken ring lands when I removed the piston rings.
So, the short story is I need new pistons :(

Atleast the cherry picker worked.

Did some stuff today aswell.

Beat out the old rod bolts, an put in ARP ones. The instructions said that you should resize the rods when replacing rod bolts.
What does this mean, and is it absolutely necessary?

Then I started the job of putting in the last ES bushings I had left laying around from my master kit.
These are to go on the steering rack. I have been wondering where these went for quite some time. So I took a few pictures incase anyone else has wondered about the same thing.
And that large round one was a real PITA to replace!

Finally some DIY motor mount inserts. Does the job perfectly I hope.

I will soon have a true 1.6 liter engine :) The 0.5mm overbore will yeld 1611cc.
So that's 21cc more than the stock block.

I have also bought a set of Endyns Roller Wave pistons. Compression will rise a tad from before, so I guess that's a little more power right there.

I just can't wait to get this build on the road again!
