ok, so now that my PS quit working i wanna take it out, do i have to do anything else other than just take all the stuff out? pump, lines, reservior? because i have heard that you have to change to a manual rack, but then others have said that you just loop your wires or something like that...any help is appreciated

A manual rack is preferred, but you can simply remove your pump, lines, etc and just plug your fluid line @ the steering rack.

cool, thank you

yeah, just loop the input and output lines. it'll also help if you run a T between the two lines and run a hose up to some sort of reservoir so that it can push the air out when turning the wheels.

that's basically how Padawan from H-T sells his kit for PS removal. :TU: its also the same method used on the RealTimeRacing cars.

have a link for that kit?

PM bill, he removed his ps, but last year he had a problem and his rack started to lock up on him.

if you just remove it and leave the hoses hanging you can start having problems... its best to just circulate the lines so oil is still in.

so you can just take the hose that goes from the rack to the pump, cut it, and recirculate it to the input from the pump to the rack?

from what i was told yes.... i still have my canister... with the pump attached.. but no belt.... cause old owner took it off... and im not sure if i want it in...

i kinda have a similar problem.

you might want to keep your ps rack cause it offer's more turning radius than manuals..

i also had a question, does the ps rack need to breathe? say if i used fittings to plug the holes, would that work.

that's interesting, i'd like to know too

what I did with mine was got a clutch res and ran lines from it to the rack to keep it lubed. They sell a bypass kit that has braided lines and all, but it's 90 bucks or so

i'm gonna try to go to the hardware store or some plumbing store and find some closed fitting plugs to use on mine, i saw "egCoupe" at suja 1 and he just cut the lines and bled the fluid and he said it worked fine, so i might do that if i can't find some fittings

you wont find fittings for your ps rack. for mine i just took out all the hardlines and salvaged the oem fittings. i wire brushed them, welded them shut and grinded them down smooth to cap off the holes. i left the fluid inside the rack as well. although those fittings are air tight, im wondering if there should be air circulating through the rack

No air should be circulating through the steering rack, but i wondered if you completely seal off the lines, will there be extreme pressure inside the rack during sharp turns.

i think i might cut off the hard lines, and get some of that "catch can" hose that you can get at menards and loop it input to output, that way when you turn the fluid can move through the hose and not bind with pressure

it seems so

here's my PS removal how to: step one: buy basemodel DX that has no power steering. ;-)

looping the lines is best, otherwise you're building pressure against one side or another, and that will create alot more resistance than you'd like.

donut.

looping the lines would do the same. the pump itself releases the pressure somehow

OniFactor

looping the lines allows fluid to move from one end of the rack to the other, that's the major point.

ahh, i see. that would make sense but pressure would still build up? i have no idea how to loop my lines cause for one, i dont have the ps lines anymore and i have a RHD rack. i believe the RHD racks have more holes in them, 6 to be exact

eheh... powersteering is good... i rode without it for a while... but decided to put it back on.... makes it so much easier to make u turns and go in and out of places... but not having it was ok... i just wanted a more comfortable drive...

ya, I love no powersteering:) , When my first ej got stolen I said if my next one had power steering I'd take it out, but I got like..the lowest model ej2.. so no powersteering, no clock, no passenger side mirror (ya it has a mirror block off plate there), my car was the first I've seen with that.:jdm:

there already is a thread about power steering and most of the people who replied to this replied there also one of the super mods merge the two threads

i just close-looped mine, haven't had any problems. you could undo the loop and throw some fluid in ther from time to time, just in case. although i would much rather like to get a manual rack, it feels much better than a converted power rack.
