View Full Version : angrychicken's slow arse civic build!

Here's a little thread about my piece of shite, "angrychicken".
First off, I want to apologize for the pic res., all I have is a digi camcorder.I didn't post any pics of the civic stock, because we have all seen a stock civic and my civic still looks, well, pretty stock. I picked up this car in PDX, OR. I had just totaled my previous EJ1 and I was shopping for a hatch (don't flame me!). I needed a car quick and spent only 1 day shopping around and I found my current car, I picked up this black coupe from single female owner with 76K for just for 3grand. I drove the car for almost 2yrs until I sprung an almost unoticeable exhaust leak and decided to repair it by throwin in a b16 that I had in storage.
Out with the single slammer.
I could not afford a hoist so I had to pull it out by hand. 2 friends and I did the swap over a few hours and several racks of beer, in a alley way car port.
I than took my car to the exhaust shop for shop 2.25 piping and slapped on my old magnaflow muffler.
I took out my car to my first autocross with some tore up radials that shouldn't have passed tech. I found out that I was amazingly slow compared when compared to other experienced drivers. The next mod I did was upgrading the wheels and tires for something a little better. I picked up these wheels on ebay from Jarco for around $40bucks each and wrapped them up with some ES100's that I bought for $200 shipped from discounttires.com. At the same time I put on a stock lip that was painted and given to me by a friend.
At this time, my car had over 200K on it and needed new suspenison, I decided to pick up some cheap Nex coilovers on ebay and got to work.
My friend Jason, his cousin Bret and I left to the shop in the morning to begin the coilover install. Before starting my project I made sure I had all of tools and supplies that were needed. I thought I had brought everything, but as usual, whenever I'm packing supplies for a project or leaving on vacation, I forget something. On this occasion I find out indeed that I had forgot something extremely major/minor. In this instance I had forgot to put on my deodorant, I had no choice but to take Bret?s advice and ?Sweat it out?. While my car is on jacks, I thought I would take advantage of the moment and perform other maintenance, I bled by brakes, swapped out my front rotors, and did an oil change.
Here is my car at my friend?s shop (Jason), 13garage.
I took tons of pics but because the res and lighting was so poor I won't post them. In the background is a 240 that is in it's build process, it's a super-duper-mega-kung-fu build that will be discussed at another time:twisted:. The Nex kit came with two large zip ties and some strange looking blocks which I assume should be used to attach the break lines (no install instructions). The coilover body has no threaded brackets in which the front break lines can be attached. At 13garage, we believe that zip ties serve better in securing bumpers and fenders (Jason is an O.G. member of ziptied.com). I felt more comfortable with securing the brake lines in a different manner. We took off the brake line bracket from the old shock body and reattached them to the car but had to customize them a bit first. Here is Jason enlarging the hole for a bracket that we will use to mount the break line. Note the safety precautions that are used, whenever using power tools, eye protection is a must. Jason believes that suspenders over a Bob Ross t-shirt helps out as well.
We reinstalled the bracket to the front suspension, after checking the turning clearance, I was glad to see that was no interference with repositioning the break line.
We than started on the rear suspension, and ran into some seized bolts underneath the car. I than put my past experience in other matters to work. Some tasks may be tight, difficult and may seem stubborn. If you?re a person in know you can overcome such obstacles, although gentle coaxing maybe required.
When uninstalling the rear I simply duplicated what I had done in the front. The stock shock body has a threaded bolt type extension that the Nex coilover did not.
I believe this is a lazy oversight by the manufacture. The shop that we were working in was miles away from town; it would take hours to drive into town to pick up two nuts and bring them back to secure the coilover to car.....
Good thing we watched McGyver about a million too many times as children.
The old suspenison was tired so I did not feel bad when it was used to donate a temporary bolt. I than took out the car for a few spirted runs on open country roads and in a large vacated lot. I than drove back to the shop and adjusted the ht and preload a bit. I repeated this process several times until I achieved the ride I liked. While working on the suspension I had some other parts en route to my home, a couple of days later these arrived.
I picked up the 215's for <$50 a tire from discounttires.com and the Volks for $500 shipped from a fellow autorcrosser. The wheels were barely used and had no wear. The Volks are just plain sick, tipping the scales at 6lbs, light enough for my kids to lug around.
I had the wheels and tires mounted at a tire shop a few blocks away from my house and threw them on the car. Had some good help from my kids (thanks Vong and Isaiah!).
Unfortunately the wheels did not clear the front brake calipers, so I picked up a couple of wheel spacers.
The spacer on the left was two large, not allowing proper torque down of the lug nuts, the spacer on the right was not wide enough. Although I hated doing it, I went ahead and grinded the caliper a bit for fitment. A race was the following morning and I lacked the maturity to wait for extended wheel lugs, also my ES100's were pretty well worn and I did not believe the old set tires would last throughout a day of racing.
I than went a few months without any more mods. While grabbing some coffee before work a guy backed his truck into my hood. His insurance company cut me a check and so I bought a set of Kumho 711's and a used hood from a friend.
Here's a few pics of the ride in it's current state from the http://www.ssscc.org/ website. I probably won't do much with the car this year.

I've got a rear disk conversion en route and I'll be painting the roof this summer when I get back from vacation, but for the most part I'm going to slut myself out by racing other cars instead this year. I'm not going to be racing as often but when I do, I'll be using a FD and a 240sx. I have friends that can afford to build better cars than I, so I'm going to be those cars instead. I still want to change my spring rates, (400F, 475R), but I'm in no rush to do that.

Well I've sort of moved from "building" to maintenance stuff. Tonight a friend of mine is going to help be out by throwing in a new timing belt and water pump, my windshield was broke yesterday (hood opened while driving) so that gets replaced on Wed.
I ordered a clutch from a seller on H-Tech but I think he is going to try to rip me off so I requested a refund through paypal.
There is one more race this year that I'd like to attend and I'd like to do some minor upgrades before that if possible.

Well we got a new timing belt/water pump/ pulley tensioner on tonight.
I'm waiting to hear back from a friend on a new windshield and waiting to see what happens with my new clutch.
Hopefully I can get all these parts on soon. I'll be allmost 1k in the whole on just repairs/maintenance, that sucks...
angrychicken

Finally got the new clutch in last week after quite a bit of drama.
Since I'm doing less racing, I've decided to go with a less aggressive clutch.
Stage 1 Exedy
Started off my yanking out the radiator, dizzy, and moved harness, clutch line, hoses, etc.
Can't do a job without some good (and free) help!
My son going @ it.
Instead of pulling out the shafts off the car completly(don't have 32mm socket), I just "loosened" them up a bit by releasing the ball joints.
Leaving the nut on keeps the stud safe from hammer. Little advice I took from by buddy Guerrmo(h22 ek hatch driver).
Here's the source of my name (do I have to change it now?).
Here's the pressure plate. Anyone regonize the brand? Just wondering.
Stopped working on the car yesterday around 4ish to meet up with my family and celebrate my dad's 63rd b-day.
I'll get back to it this morning.

I had to enlist some more help today, getting the flywheel off was a back strain for me but my 8yr old fit just fine.
Here's the old flywheel along the the resurfaced one that I picked up.
My six puck still had pad life, but as you can see the stock flywheel is shot.
I got the new clutch kit on and the tranny mounted with some help from my buddy Efrain.
While I had some down time I also rerouted some of the wiring for a cleaner look.
I'll have to finish the rest of the stuff later and post some pics.
Thank for looking!

Your kid must have alot of strength.!! :TU:
Ha! I actually broke them loose of course, but he did pull them out! I just grabbed the flywheel when he took off the last one so he wouldn't fall on his lap.
This project has been headache for the most part, but the cool part was teaching my kids about mechanics, we even made a science lesson out of it.
They were taught how to increase torque by moving fulcrum points, kenitic energy vs enertia etc...

Been awhile since I've posted here because, well, it's been a while since anything has been done.
I've been concentrating on school so I haven't had much time/money for much else.
I did just order some Victoracers though, found a new set for $200, sweet deal that I couldn't pass on.

02-02-2007, 04:03 PM
Picked up the last set from http://www.cindilux.com/
I was given her e-mail from an old autocross buddy.
If anyone is looking for some race wheels or R-Compounds let me know.
I sometimes find similar deals on racer forums.
angrychicken
02-03-2007, 04:25 AM
Well I'm pretty stoked, my new R-Compounds should be here soon, the end price ended up $225 shipped. If you look up these tires on tire rack, you'll see I really got lucky.
I probably won't get much racing this year in due to school, but I'd like my car to be ready just in case. The only set of 15" wheels I had were my old and tired Yokohama/Advans that weigh in at 13lbs each. That's just too heavy for me to use on the track, so I picked up some SSRs tonight from a cool guy I met on honda-tech.
Pics of the new wheels when I get off my lazy arse.
angrychicken
02-03-2007, 01:19 PM
The new set.
I might keep the tires on there for now, or switch them over to my advans so I can wrap the SSRs with the victoracers. I haven't decided yet, but I'm happy with the deal either way. I'm also thinking about getting my old Volks back, my friend needing cash, and the cost of 14" tires is really appealing.

I've got a few maintenance things to do on this car over next couple of weeks. Picked up new tire rod last night, so that will get slapped on then I'll get Firestone's lifetime alignment.
My driver's seat broke while driving a couple days ago, either my car is getting old, or I'm getting heavier (I hope it's the car). So I'm shopping for a new seat(s). I found a nice set all black del sols that I like, but the seller is really far away and we haven't found a time when we could meet up.
I'm also window shopping for a new CF hood, I really like the "K-Style" hood, but haven't seen one for awhile so I might nab another OEM styled one.
If anyone finds a good deal on seat(s), or a CF hood, please let me know.
Thanks for the compliments!

Not a whole lot actually. On Thursday SpeedyLite (sp?) is coming out to my work to replace my windshield for $170ish on Thursday, I was supposed to have this fixed months ago, but the window dude kept flaking out. Friday a friend of mine is picking up my car to swap out a tie rod, after that I'll get a lifetime alignment so I can adjust toe out when I need it.
I called hmotors today to pick up some del sol seats cause my drivers seat broke last week, but they sold them 1/2 hour prior to my call (d'oh!). So I'm on the hunt for a seat(s). I'm hoping they will stock another set soon, cause I want to nab a rear sway bar from them and I'll save a wee bit on shipping.
I'll try to post picks of the new wheels this weekend along with some random nickle/dime stuff. DK if I'll have time though cause I itching for some snowboarding!!!
Thanks for looking!

Well, it may be time to start a new project.
While I was in class in Grandview, WA last night my car was stolen.
I made out a police report but I have the feeling it's gone for good, probably been stripped already at some chop shop.
Car theft in this area sucks, and I checked to KBB value for a stock civic, it ran about 3K, insurance will prob only pay out only 75% of that.
Swapped out civics in this area go for about 4k, so I'll be taken a loss.
Sucks, I just replaced my windshield out yesterday too.
I'm looking around for something else right now, dk what route I'm going yet.

Word, sucks to live in this area, auto theft is out of control.
Well, I'm looking @ a pretty stock 93 Si right now for just under 3k.
I need a car by Sunday, when Monday comes around I'll have to take the kids to school, go to work, go school during lunch, return to work, then drive 45miles after work to school again, then drive back, pick up the kids, and then go home.
Ain't going to happen on my bicycle.
I was just talking to my friend who drives a Si, he takes out his fuel relay whenever he leaves his car, even if he is just running into to store for a quick stop. I just might have to do the same thing.
Hopefully the insurance co will consider my modifications and depreciate the value from there.
angrychicken
02-09-2007, 09:30 PM
Here is what I'm looking @.
93 Si, the owner pulled out the stock engine with plans to build it but hasn't touched it yet. Right now it has a Dx swap, the original swap will come with the car uninstalled. Has about 130K.
97 Ex Coupe bone stock with 200K.
They both are going to run jush a bit under $3K.
The Si can be pretty competitive in autocross.
What do you guys think?

tak ethe hatchie! lighter and easier to work with, by far. 96+ are a bitch, ask me or speedy, or EJ1rider, lol their cars are both 92-95, so easy to work with, and my 97 Ej6 is the bastard child to work on, lol.

I applied last fall, competed against 600 applicants, and endured an 8hr interview.
A few days ago I was invited to attend the University of Washington School fo Medicine's PA-C program. I start in 2 months. This is one of my larger accomplishments so far. Not bad for a punk kid from the ghetto who is riddled with tatooes.
I'm looking forward to working in the underserved community and performing medical missions in other countries.
Sadly this means my car will def be staying stock so I can enjoy the 40+mpg.

It's a double edged sword. Everytime a see a car go through a corner without roll I die inside. I went to an interview for school a few weeks ago in Spokane, WA. Spent the night at my friends house, he's an old autocross budy. I was drooling when he showed me his street miata, parts miata, autocross miata, and I about _____ when I saw his freshly built spec miata.
Hopefully after school I will be able to jump back in the game.

Bout time I posted here.
My little midori has next to now mods. The only thing that I have done to it is installed a cheap stereo, yakima roof rack/fairing/bike racks/snowboard rack.
A few days ago that even that came to an end.
I was driving home after a day of snowboarding with the kids and a friend on a 2 lane highway. I was in front of 2 other vehicles, a Volks R32, and a toyota pick up (in that order).
I slowed down after I saw some flares, 4-5 girls standing on the shoulder, a tow truck pulling a car out of a ditch, and a state trooper directing traffic. The Volkswagen and I were than driving around 15-25mph, I then noticed in my side mirror that the pickup was overtaken us. The drive lost control of his truck, spun out and hit me, pushing my car off the road. There is a huge dent in the rear quarter panel, right where my 10yr old was sitting.
The car is damaged from bumper-bumper all along the driver side. The reckless driver came with a few feet of nailing the girls standing off the side of the road.
I'm glad my kids are ok, but now I don't have transport to the mt until this gets cleared up.
It's also too damn cold and snowy to ride my bike.

man that sucks, Im glad to hear you and your kids are alright. The county I live in cut budgets and one of the budget cuts was to NOT use salt on roads anymore. We've had an inch of ice on all the roads for the past 4 days. I've come close a few times myself to getting hit by bad drivers. I just hate people that don't think about the weather conditions or anyone else around them. sorry about your luck man.

I pretty sure the dude got a hefty ticket, the state trooper was pissed as hell.
I'm not sure what car to get next, I'm eyeballing some DCs, EJ1s, another EK and a Suby Impreza Outback.
School is a monster, I'm glad to be on break.
MDs get a full round of med school plus residency.
We get a year of didactics and then another year of clinical rotations to learn 80% of what MDs get.
I've been blowing off steam by snowboarding as much as I can.

I've been eyeballing another black ej1, a silver EJ8, red dc2, and a impreza outback wagon cause I have always thought the 2.5 RS was pimp and rallyish.

Ehh, they felt allright. I wouldn't tell anyone to buy them though, the quality was pretty poor. The rubber components broke down after a year or so and the paint chipped out the springs in just a few months.
If I started all over I'd go with PIC or Ground Controls with Konis.

So I've been leaning more towards the Subies and here is where I'm at.
Found 1999 2.5 rs coupe locally with 108K on the odometer for $6k. The dealer just got it in and it wasn't available for a test drive so I was told to come back after the weekend.
I was in Seattle over the weekend for a conference and was also hoping to score (in more ways than one).
Test drove a 01 Impreza outback that was listed for $5k. I wasn't really able to open it up due to traffic, but I really like how it handled. It did not feel like a wagon and felt pretty neutral with little body roll. Too that it stunk like cigarettes, had a previous repaired wreck, and the clutch was almost dead (slipping in 5th gear when on the highway).
Found another Impreza outback on craigslist that looked solid in the pics. When I went to go look at it, it was in the middle of what looked like a honda chop shop. It looked like it hadn't been driven in years and was filled with plywood, old rims/tires, and tools. I didn't feel the need to test drive it or even look under the hood.
Came back home to scope out the 2.5 RS. Went to the dealership during my lunch to test drive it but it was in the detail shop. I looked it over and agreed to come back after school 4hrs later to test drive it. Sticker price was still 6K, I planned on trying to low-ball but I went to the bank and brought enough cash to buy it out at the full price.
Came back when I said I would but was told that someone put $1k down to hold it on the internet. I'm 2nd in line to purchase it but I am pretty sure it's sold.
Now I am back to square one and still riding my back in 12 degree temps.

That could be true, but I want something nicer that won't get stolen.
Yakima, WA + Nice Civic/Integra = stolen
I'm probably going to have to hold off on car shopping for a bit though, I have mid-terms all next week and I'm not ready.
