I had one of these before, just replacing it to keep everyone up to date on the goings on of the site. Subscribe here to get notification of the newest updates.

Nothing new this weekend, I worked on the April feature page and got it laid out, I just need a few more pictures and it'll all be done and ready to go, so hopefully next weekend I'll finish the shoot and the page will be up early next week.

Here is the last update shoot I did last week, SOL food's Del Sol. Check the SOL food album in the gallery for the updated pictures.

Little by little I add to it. April's feature will have a lot of pictures, probably around 40.

Finished the April feature shoot up. My website has grown so fast, in this case TOO fast! I get "YOUR WEBSITE IS ABOUT TO EXCEED ITS BANDWIDTH LIMIT" emails daily from my server company... ironic since I started the website because I was tired of going over my photobucket bandwidth limit. I'm happy with the shoots, my newest problem has been finding originality in car shoots because the angles and styles have been the same for me, and I'm afraid my shoots will get boring. Oh well, at least the shots are clear and the cars show well, which is what people are interested in seeing.

Also shot a feature for NWP4LIFE, a white DC2 Integra 100% authentic from Japan. One of the most amazing restorations I've seen, the attention to detail is unbelievable. This car was featured in January 2006 in Honda Tuning magazine, but has had a few changes since (wingless, white Regamasters, and OEM lip). Hopefully you'll enjoy that feature as well.

Lastly, I have a friend who was voted Spring EG feature on JDMUniverse, and I did the feature shoot for him as well. Kinda rushed, but it was a last minute thing so I guess it'll have to do for now. He's supposed to be getting new wheels and a new valve cover soon, and since I had planned on making him a dH feature car anyway, look for him to be a monthly feature on my site in the next few months. Definately nice car and nice build.

People posting pictures directly from my site (myself included) killed my bandwidth. I'm trying to upgrade it as we speak, but otherwise the site will be down until the next billing cycle (I believe it starts on the 3rd). In other words, site might be down until Monday or early next week. Sorry, not really my fault on this one.

Did a feature shoot for NWP4LIFE a couple weeks ago, the photography is up on my site, and the full feature should be up on NWP in the next few days.

Went up last night for a last minute canyon run and photoshoot... as in, I get a call at 4 p.m. "hey! Lets go up to the canyon and take pictures!" Gump, Tanner, Mugen boy Carlos, Ziggy Ray and myself in 3 cars. It was lots of fun hanging outside the window and sunroof through the turns. The new DPEs on Ray's E46 look DOPULAR but they're too damn wide (19 X 10) and the car is so dumped that even with stretched tires it rubbed like no tomorrow (there's no lettering left on the sidewall anymore). More fender rolling/trimming to come this week for that car.

The next canyon run is already in the works, hopefully with a few more cars (including mine) and more time with daylight to shoot. All in all a fun afternoon and good times with good friends.

A lot of people have asked me for pictures for desktop backgrounds, so I've decided to add a desktop section of the online magazine. I don't have enough to put up on the site yet, but I'll start making desktops in 1280 X 1024 of the pictures I consider my favorites.

Here's the first one I made:

we can't add hyperlinks to images because of the way we set up the site. i added an auto-resize feature so that when ppl post HUGE pics (not you, but ppl who can't resize) it will automatically resize them with a link to the original. i just changed the link so it pulls up the full-size wallpaper now. :TU:

LOTS of updated content this week! It was a busy weekend but I had tons of fun hanging with friends, and making new ones.

Saturday I made a trip down to Oceanside to JDMConcepts for a dyno day at the request of my friend @ries. I don't have anything worth dynoing, but it was fun to watch all the cars run and take a few pictures, and to hang with some SD friends I hardly get to see. Sucks that I didn't get to stay to see everyone's runs, but it was fun for the few hours we stayed nonetheless. Thanks @ries and all of the JDMConcepts crew for hosting us and providing the free beer and pizza. I was supposed to go to the ClubEK/JDMCivic meet afterward, but I had to be back in LA at 6 p.m. for a family function and didn't have time to make it down there. Luckily, word is that they'll be having another one around August that I definately plan on attending.

Sunday I went to Rev Auto's re-opening event to promote their new shop location and to support my friend Mike. Weather could've been better but it was once again fun hanging with my friends and taking pictures of everyone while they weren't looking. Free food and beer is always a bonus.

Rev Auto is a small, mostly internet business shop that specializes in everything from ABS dynamics to Tein and Mugen. It wouldn't hurt to visit the site or send an email when you're looking for parts, www.revautoUSA.com (http://www.digitalhorizon-online.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=43).

I don't have much other opinion since I don't know anyone else there personally and have never had work done or bought parts from them.

Well, this isn't so much of an update to the website as to me, but somewhat indirectly it applies to the site as well.

I got my D200 yesterday. Sorry, I took a pic of it but somehow left it at home on my HD so I'll upload it later. Think of it as the D70's big brother. All I can say is WOW what a difference. Didn't think of it as much an upgrade as much as buying a D70 with newer technology and faster performance. Man was I wrong.

The D200 vs. the D70 is night and day. The D70 treated me wonderfully for the past year (can't believe I've only had it for 11 months), and till now I still enjoy using it as much as ever. I've heard comments from other guys (Canon users no less) that the D70 shutter sounded precise and clean. Coming from the PnS world to the D70, it felt like a HUGE step up that took me months to master. I was overwhelmed with its features and settings, but took it little by little until I figured everything out, and read up on all the features and what each of them do. I feel I know the D70 pretty well, and I loved shooting with it for the past few months because I finally knew my equipment and was making the best use of it. People have commented that my pictures have looked a lot better over the past few months and I'm 100% sure this is why. I'm sure technique and practice, experience shooting, and post processing had a big part in it too.

The thing I started to notice was, when I would go to race events, the D70 couldn't keep up with me, and I was starting to get frustrated with the 3 fps. I was also getting a bit frustrated at the lack of a useable vertical shutter release. I have the battery grip, but its 3rd party and the vertical shutter is such a pain to use I've never used it after that first try. The screen was also a bit hard to see sometimes, and it always underexposed shots in marginal light (like sunset). I was also about to get some large prints made, and the 6.1 tended to pixelate just a bit at 30 X 20.

Now, the things I loved about the D70. Infrared remote! I LOVE this thing. I can't believe I have to go without it. The D200 has an infrared setup but its expensive (the D70's was only $11, the D200 is about $165), and is a pain to use, while the D70 you just set it to remote and click away. It was also decently fast, and with 4GB I could get about 700 RAW files saved.

Now that I have the D200, the D70 seems dated. Not that its not a 100% up to date, useful camera, but the D200 seems like "tomorrow" and the D70 feels awfully "today." Hopefully that makes sense, but its more like the D70 is the best today's technology can bring, and the D200 is the new state of the art stuff. I found myself saying "wow, I can't believe I lived without this all this time... things are going to be so much easier now!" The 9 point auto focus points are a MUST! All of the times I wanted to focus on something but had to focus then re-frame the shot, no more! Now I can just point, select my focus area, and shoot. The view finder is also noticeably bigger, which makes seeing what you're shooting much easier. There's no useless "night" or "portrait," etc., modes on the D200 either. The battery has a "shots since last charge" and "percentage left" meters for BOTH batteries (if using the MB-D200 multi battery pack), and even though I haven't printed anything yet, that 10.2 MP can't hurt. All of the features are changeable on the fly from the body, no need to go through menus for most of the core photographic features. Cool.

On to the biggest improvements... the LCD is HUGE compared to the D70. I can actually see what I've shot, and is viewable even in bright sunlight from most angles. Also, 5 fps!!! Damn this thing sounds like a card shuffler. Now, I know for most of the 20D guys this isn't a big deal, and I have a friend with a D2Hs that shoots 8 fps, but from 3 fps this was amazing when I first held it down. This is going to come in VERY handy at the track!

I've honestly only shot like 20 shots with this, I've only had it since yesterday afternoon and with work, working out, and getting ready for my trip I didn't have much time to mess with it... but from what I've seen (and I've only shot with the 10.5mm fisheye so far) its GREAT! The shutter sounds completely different... like a crisp snap as opposed to a mechanical click. I guess I could say, the D200 feels more like a "pro" SLR in my hands and when I'm using it, the D70 feels like an "advanced amateur" SLR (now, having used both). Its pretty apparent the D200 is a high end camera meant to outdo the 20D and compete with the 5D, not a camera marketed toward the beginner/amateur (which is what I am). There are tons of features and menus I haven't gotten to yet, but I'm sure over the next few weeks and months I'll be learning a lot. First shoot will probably be of the Macho Man's new look, and the June feature car (an old favorite).

Time to get to work, that's my 12 hour old review of the D200. I'll give a 1 month update review which I'm sure will be full of more raves. This camera is GREAT. $1700 well spent.

Don't be fooled by MP! Picture clarity has little to do with megapixels.

"Quality" has nothing to do with megapixels when referring to resized pics you'd see on the web. Megapixels merely tell you how much a picture can be enlarged before pixelation takes over. A 900 X 600 picture on the web is 540,000 pixels, or 0.54 megapixel. Whether that shot was with a 0.8 MP camera phone or 22 MP Mamiya digital camera, the image STILL has 0.54 MP on your screen. Sensor and lens quality and glass clarity have much more to do with quality (often, "quality" is used to define sharpness... I use it to describe sharpness + color) than megapixels do.

A good example, my friend's D2Hs is 4.1MP, but takes better pictures than some of these 8 MP cameras available. Why? His sensor is of high quality and the glass he is using is also. Some of these point and shoot cameras have high megapixel counts but if you're not printing large prints, they're pointless if they don't have good quality glass and sensors.

Megapixels really only count in prints. Basically, a print is a bunch of dots on a paper, all in different colors. Each "dot," or pixel, contributes a portion of the image. Typically, prints can be anywhere from 100-300 dpi (dots per inch). Each "dot" is a pixel, so if you have a camera that is 6.1MP like my D70 which shoots at 3008 X 2000 @ full resolution, at 100 dpi you can print an image to 30.08 X 20 inches. If you want it at 300 dpi it'll be a third of the size.

The truth is, most people don't print any larger than an 8 X 10 since that's what most home printers will print, and that's as large as you'd want to put on your wall (typically). Think about it, even at 300 dpi, a print that is 8" X 10" will still only be 3000 X 2400 pixels! This means that anything over 6 or so megapixel is WAY overkill for the mainstream consumer. All of those extra megapixel (which most people think is giving them better clarity) is really going for nothing at all. My experience with my 3.2 MP and 5.0 MP point and shoots is, they both print just fine at 8 X 10. I've printed several prints with those cameras and they came out just as clear at 8 X 10 as my D70.

Now, if you're printing a 30 X 20, anything larger than 100 dpi and you'll probably start to notice some pixelation, since for each inch of print there are less pixels defining the image. Trying to print a 30 X 20 with a 3 MP camera will probably not look so great, as you'll have to stretch the pixels pretty wide to make it enlarge that big, and you'll get nice ugly square boxes.

Cliffs notes:

Large print quality = Megapixels
Clarity/quality = Sensor/lens quality

Thanks everyone. JDMCC has always shown support and appreciation and I'm greatful for that. I don't consider myself anything special at all, photography is just a hobby I take seriously because it gives me a productive way to spend my time, hang out with friends during shoots, and meet cool new people. In the end, I have pictures that make people proud of what they own and will last a lifetime, which is why I love doing what I do so much.

Unfortunately, I've been too busy to do any photo work lately... but the longer I go without it the more I need it. I need a Sunday where I'm not doing 100 things to just go out back and look for flowers and bugs to take close up macros of... just to relax. Work is getting to bog me down and I need to unwind a bit. Hopefully this business trip I'm taking next week will do the trick.

Speaking of work, I have to get up at 5 a.m., so I better get some sleep. Thanks again everyone.

Your pictures always come out looking amazing. I can't wait to see how this new camera performs. I know absolutely nothing when it comes to photography, but from the looks of things (i.e. your pictures you take and the terminology you use) you seem to know what you're doing. I would like to get into photography one of these days and seeing your pics is inspiring.

Also, I didn't know that megapixels were to do with the sizing of pictures. I always thought they had to do with clarity, the more megapixels, the more resolution and clearer image you will get. Just goes to show how much I know about photography.

I am, in fact, still alive.

I was gone all last week on a business trip, and on my last day there woke up with a severely pinched nerve in my neck, just below my right ear. Every time I would move it would give me horrible pain, which lasted for just a second, then would be gone. For the first couple days it was really bad, got better Sunday, then I woke up yesterday feeling worse again. This morning feels better, but I still get "twinges" here and there like when I'm getting out of the car or stretching to pick something up. I should be ok, no need to worry I don't think. I just need some rest, which ironically is hard since I can't find a comfortable way to sleep and I've been up tossing around half the night for the past few days.

So, I went to Vegas last week for a conference for work... and YES it was fun as hell. Got to walk the entire strip from Stratosphere to Mandalay Bay and even walked to the Rio. We flew in Sunday afternoon (immediately after Eibach, which is both why I left early and I didn't have time to put the pictures up) and stayed until Friday afternoon. It was a lot of fun, got lots of work done too... but I left my cameras at home because I didn't feel comfortable leaving $5000 in equipment in my room while I was at the conference for 9 hours a day. I really have to get a point and shoot to take with me to at least record some memories. I'm thinking of getting the girlfriend a nice PnS for her birthday in August so she can start shooting with me (and isn't so bored for the hours I'm shooting) and I can maybe get some shots of me since I'm never in pictures. I'm thinking PowerShot SD500 or SD550, or maybe that new Nikon that I just saw a commercial for yesterday... it looks cool but will probably be pretty expensive, in which case it might be smarter to get a D50 and let her learn a real camera, since my hobby isn't going anywhere and eventually she'll probably want to take it up herself as a long term hobby. Meh, who knows, I might just get her makeup and clothes like a normal couple. There are pictures of me though, from my co-worker's camera that I might put up so you can see the antics I got myself into when I wasn't working. Like I said, it was a great trip, I'm fiending for Vegas again already so I'm planning on going back in July/August for my birthday (also my brother's and gf's), this time without work to worry about. Should be fun except for the 110 degree heat and exaggerated summer room rates!

So, even though I didn't have my camera (which I sorely missed, inside Bellagio and Wynn especially), I will have it next time for sure and get plenty of cool pictures of Vegas. I'm already leaving again, I'm going to Mesa, AZ this weekend to visit my cousin and his girlfriend, who moved there last year. It'll be fun, but I have to admit I just want to stay home for a weekend and do nothing, watch Discovery channel all day and eat ice cream. Haven't done that in a long while, I kinda miss it and I need to unwind a bit. Life is hectic, but at least I can say I'm living it to its fullest and not sitting on my ass bored. I have so many memories and pictures of those memories from the past year, its amazing. Guess being so busy has its upside.

That brings an end to the random ramblings portion of this update, here's the site updates that I'm bringing to you this week.

New camera is STILL amazing! I shot for the first time with it at Eibach (walking around with 2 DSLRs all day wasn't all its cracked up to be, I only really used the other one twice... one had the fisheye and the other one had the kit lens). The only issues I have/had were the metering and autofocus. It seems like the matrix and center-weighted metering are pretty unpredictable, sometimes underexposing by a full stop, sometimes hitting it right on, and even overexposing a few shots. It took a bit of work to get the shots postable, and some I couldn't. Luckily, most were fixable with some exposure compensation and a levels/brightness/curves adjustment. The autofocus also seemed a bit soft, but that could also be just me getting used to having 11 AF points and not choosing the right one. Overall, the camera has adjustment settings for both of these issues and I'm sure with some experience and manual reading I can figure out how to get them perfected. I'm not too happy with the Eibach set but slowly things are coming around and I'm really really happy with my new camera overall. Most of these are touched in some way, some sharpening or brightening mostly to correct the aforementioned problems.

Streets were packed, cops were being gay. I normally side with the police, but in this case I would say they were just being gay. Ticketing cars for blocking traffic by being parked in the middle of the street is one thing, walking down a line of cars legally parked on a public street and giving tickets to 99% stock vehicles that aren't lowered with no exhaust or tint for no front plate is homo. Sorry, but Corona PD sucked that day.

After Eibach, I drove straight to LAX to catch my flight to the conference. I was in LV all week, got back Friday, with a pinched nerve and a lot of memories (and receipts for alcohol in my pocket). Since I wasn't happy with the Eibach shots, I wanted to get out and see what the camera could do, so I forced myself to go out shoot, and one of my favorite victims happened to be available... mugen boy Carlos. I shot it at a spot around the corner from my house since it was easy and I wasn't feeling so good, but I'm starting to realize now that its not too good for black or dark cars because of all the colored reflections. My white car looked great there but Alex and Carlos' cars didn't come out so well. It still came out good, but I think I need to find better locations.

Notice that the picture quality is nearly identical to the old camera, despite having a 4 MP advantage (D200 = 10.2MP, D70 = 6.1MP). Both are just as clear, both are just as sharp, which makes sense since they're the same sensor (the D200's is more "dense," meaning it has more pixels on the same size sensor) and the lenses used are the same. There is a slight bit of improved quality from shooting at ISO100 (the D70 only goes down to ISO200) but its not very noticeable to be honest. ISO200 suited me just fine and ISO100 really only showed to me in the next set of shots I'll post after the mugen boy shoot (more on that later).

One of my first attempts, not so great but at least I got the concept right. I completely tweaked my neck trying to set the camera up in the back seat and was literally out of commission for a few minutes trying to be able to stand up straight again, so I hope it was worth it! Don't mind the fact that the car was in neutral and off and we were only rolling as fast as I could push it forward. There should be better shots to come.

Last but not least, Mother's day was last Sunday. My girlfriend's mom's house has a really big yard and her grandparents are big on gardens and flowers so I took my macro out to see what kinds of colors I could get out of the D200 (said to have better color output than the D70). I have to admit I was impressed! The 60mm macro has always been my sharpest lens, but I was amazed at how sharp the images came out, I didn't even have to touch them up at all! There is no color (saturation) enhancement on any of these.

Winston the wonder dog. I terrorize the hell out of this little rat yet somehow it still loves me.

On the way home, another one of those "I took this on accident" shots, I didn't even look through the viewfinder.

Haven't updated this in forever, so might as well.

It was an extremely busy weekend, capping off what was an extremely busy week at work for me. Yesterday we drove down to San Diego to go to the Sport Car Motion grand opening, mostly to hang out with friends but also to show support for Loi and wish him well with the new shop. It was a lot of fun walking around and hanging out with a lot of people from SD I don't see too often. If Loi ever gets around to reading this, thanks again for having us up and putting together a well organized meet. I know you had lots of help and though I don't know everyone involved, much thanks to them as well.

After the meet I took a drive up Palomar mountain with a friend of mine and took some pictures. All I can say is I wish I had my car with me instead of my girlfriend's stock auto Scion! That road was fun to drive and I plan on going back one Sunday and cruising the mountain when I have more time to enjoy it. It was a long day and a long drive home, so we left around sundown. Overall, a great way to spend a Sunday, with good friends and enjoying what I love to do.

When I first started the website I had planned on making an engineering page to follow the various projects I was planning on starting. It turned into an "I'll do it next month" type of thing when my job and personal life got really busy, not to mention the photography somewhat taking off (ironic, isn't it: I can't update my website because I'm out shooting material to update my website). I've been busy and Patrick has had some major hurdles with his work and personal life in the past few months, so all of the projects we had planned on undertaking either haven't materialized yet or have been late night solo operations that weren't documented so there isn't enough to put on a page other than a typed out story of what he did and how things went. I still plan on doing these things, but instead of having a dead link on the site page like its been since the beginning I'm going to accept that its postponed indefinately and replace it with something that at least has some worth, and will add to the things people can do while browsing the site.

Pretty basic stuff so far, just a few desktops, all in 1280 x 1024 resolution. These are some of my favorite shots and it usually doesn't take long to make them so I'll add a few here and there as the shots start coming in that are worthy. I know the first thing I'm going to hear is "I want one in 4000 x 3000!" but keep in mind that even though they're fairly easy, I still have to put in post process time and crop, etc., and they do take a bit of time that I might or might not have. I'll try and get some different resolutions up there, especially for the widescreen or gaming weirdos who use strange resolutions, but its honestly priority number 3 or 4 behind the shoots and the monthly features. Like I said, just something cool to add to the site. Eventually there might be some other stuff on there, I can't think of any idea in particular that I'd put up in the "graphics" category, but anything's possible (and it just might change into a "media" page with videos or event coverage, or links. I haven't decided or thought about possible ideas yet).

So, check it out when you get some time. Like everything else on the site, its pretty plain, but has a decent layout and is about as fancy as my web design knowledge has taken me so it'll have to do.

http://digitalhorizon-online.com/graphics/graphics_main.html

I also updated the site select page, most of you will notice it as you navigate the site anyway but for those that haven't here it is.

August feature has been up since Saturday, so some of you might've seen it already. I'm noticing the site to load a bit slow the past few days, I don't know if its due to increased traffic or a server issue. I've sent an email to my hosting company to see what the deal is, so if you notice it being slow just be patient, I'm aware of the problem and am working on getting it resolved.

Yesterday afternoon I went crawling around after the rain stopped to see what kind of weird insects I could find, and shoot some cool watered flowers too. I do this for the same reason I wear stretchy pants, its for fun.
