I believe it to be a countershaft or input shaft bearing. Sounds like a fast clicking that fallows the rpm and dies off when the clutch is depressed. Is this common?

sounds like a throwout bearing

The tranny has to be pulled to see what the problem is and since d series trannies are so common, the best fix is to just go buy another one.

If it's making a light grinding noise when the clutch is out in neutral or a gear it's most likely the Input Shaft Bearing. If it only makes noise when the clutch is depressed it's probably the throwout bearing. But like Speedy said you'll have to pull the tranny to find out the problem either way. If it's just the throwout bearing you can drop the tranny and swap out the defective bearing with a new one and bolt it back up. If it's the ISB you'd have to open the case and pull the gearset to fix it so in that case you may be better off getting another tranny.

That makes make more sense then what I posted, but if you didn't fix the problem, you have to pull the tranny again. And we all know how much of a bitch that is. I'm on my third tranny since August.:TD:

check your throw out bearing if that doesnt work then chances are its the main input shaft bearing inside the trans..... mine busted instead of swaping it out i replaced the trans

Thanks for the suggestions. It only makes noise when the clutch isn't depressed that's why I thought it was not a throwout. I'll probably swap it, since i drive it so much. Later I'll see what the problem is on the old one.
