The z6 trans is the shortest hydraulic trans available...but it rivals ls gears and im not satisfied with the ratios. On the 1/4 mile...the car kind of hops ito 2nd a little lower than I would like and 3rd gear is waaaay too long. I barely hit 4th at the end and when I do...it just kills acceleration. So basicaly I wanna build my own trans using oem gears that rivals a b16 trans. Here's what I have at my disposal:
1 minty cx trans
1 z6 trans
I can get a dx trans for super cheap
I did a little research and found that the z6 gears are not direct bolt on with the dx/cx/vx trannies. Then I found out that they all use the same first gear but different final drives...that makes things complicated since I really want to focus on 1st/2nd/3rd and then match a short 4th to the third gear. So wh here has any experience with this? I know Edwin has torn open trannies at work...I really need some how to pointers with taking apart the trans and taking the insides apart...so I would really appreciate some input.

Go on D-series.org and read all you can in the tranny section, there's a lot of good info there. Look for posts by Transzex(aka mista bone) and bense, they know their shit. Ask s_18@ch on here too, he put together a hybrid d-tranny. I've also been toying with the idea myself and have most of the stuff I need but I'm still looking for a 1.346 3rd gear. I know a thing or two but I have alot to learn myself.
A good thing to learn is how to calculate gear ratios and drop percentages for different rpms which will help you decide which gears you want. Also 1st and 2nd gear cannot be changed, they are a matched set, so your only option is to change 3,4,5 and the final gear. The tighest combo using factory gears is pretty much:3.25, 1.944, 1.346, 1.066, .878.
Your best bet with what you have is to use the cx 3rd as 4th(requires grinding) and find a 1.346 3rd gear. That leaves you with the choice of 2nd gears(EX 1.900 or DX 1.761). The 5th gear is the same for all those trannies at .702.

Someone on ht linked to mista bones' page with all of the trans ratios and gears. All of the first gears are the same...do you have any pics of the insides of a trans? the only i ever tried opening was the z6 trans i blew up last year...i could only get it an inch open because the inside was metal soup and jammed

you can always look into mfactory final drives.. they make 4.9 and they also make close ratio gears. not cheap...but its an option.
I'm looking to getting a spare S20 tranny and rebuild with mfactory 4.9 and obx lsd. :)

zc 3rd/4th...4.9 is optional. i voted against since i didn't want to sink 500 on a gear. the zc gears do need to be grinded on a little to work...i think bone has pics of what's needed somewhere.
so, hold on to the z6, tear apart the cx and take the gear set (3rd is usable on that too), throw away/scrap/sell the cx case/parts and the dx.
